Saint Jan - Original

In Saint Jan, Dan Flores plays with the visual language of religious portraiture, recasting his subject as a contemporary saint complete with a gold-leaf halo and a Chihuahua held like a cherub.

The work explores ideas at the heart of PERSONAE: the roles we inhabit, the identities we construct and the symbolism we use to elevate or transform ourselves. Dan approaches religious iconography with both affection and irreverence. 

Within the exhibition, Saint Jan is displayed above a handmade altar-like shrine fashioned from a cabinet resembling a graffitied toilet - an installation that shifts the work into gentle parody. Dan may not have set out to take the piss, but the result knowingly does, just a little.
