Rob Makin - Original
In this large-scale portrait of Rob Makin, Dan Flores explores the relationship between physical strength, vulnerability and the personal details through which identity is expressed. Rob’s muscular, heavily tattooed body fills the canvas, yet his resting pose and direct gaze create a quieter, more intimate portrait than his powerful physique might initially suggest.
Dan incorporates details that are deeply personal to Rob into the composition. A ring belonging to his Nan hangs below his arm, introducing a connection to family and memory. While the feather references one of Rob’s tattoos. Its lightness creates a striking contrast with the physical weight and strength of his body, suggesting softness and fragility alongside strength.
Together, these elements move the portrait beyond outward appearance, revealing something of the experiences, relationships and symbols that form part of an individual’s identity.
Within the PERSONAE collection, the painting reflects Dan’s fascination with the contrast between the persona we first encounter and the more personal stories that sit beneath the surface.
