King Makin - Extra Large Dibond Photographic Print
For this monumental portrait, Sergio Rodriguez presents Rob Makin crowned and completely exposed, transforming the familiar language of formal portraiture into something altogether more contemporary.
Rob’s physical presence and intricate tattoos are rendered in exquisite black-and-white detail, while his relaxed pose and direct gaze give the image a quiet confidence. The crown introduces an element of theatre and ceremony, elevating the portrait while also playing with ideas of status, masculinity, performance and persona.
The crown itself was handmade by Dan Flores, making the photograph a particularly clear example of the way Dan and Serg’s creative practices intertwine. Dan’s background in making, styling and creating objects enters Serg’s photographic world, with the resulting image belonging to neither practice entirely in isolation.
At 75 × 105 cm, the scale gives the photograph an almost imposing, sculptural presence, allowing the detail of Rob’s body, tattoos and Dan’s handmade crown to become fully immersive. It is a striking expression of the central idea behind the PERSONAE collection: identity as something both deeply personal and capable of being constructed, styled and performed.
