Circus brings together the strange, spectacular and theatrical in one of Dan Flores’ densely detailed imagined worlds. Performers, clowns, acrobats and animals tumble across the composition, creating a scene that feels somewhere between a traditional circus and a wonderfully surreal dream.

Dan plays with the spectacle of performance throughout the drawing - from the strongman and high-wire acts to clowns, a tiger and an assortment of unexpected characters tucked into the crowd. Humour runs through the work, but there is something slightly mischievous and uncanny about it too, capturing the circus as a place of transformation, exaggeration and escape.

Packed with tiny narratives and details that reveal themselves on closer inspection, Circus celebrates Dan’s fascination with characters, costume and the wonderfully unusual.
