Caveman - Original

Originally commissioned as the cover artwork for Steve Attwell’s novel ME Caveman You Narcissist, Caveman was created to represent the book’s central character, Carl. The novel explores trauma, identity, difficult relationships and the idea that strength and masculinity are more complex than outward appearances might suggest.

Carl’s muscular physique is contrasted by the small dog tucked beneath his arm. The suitcase suggests a journey or departure, while the figure walking away into the dark, atmospheric setting gives the painting a sense of movement and transition. These contrasts connect naturally with the themes of PERSONAE, particularly Dan’s interest in masculinity, vulnerability and what lies beneath outward appearances.
